Since 1988 Gcina Mhlophe has been conducting storytelling workshops in libraries, schools, and teacher training colleges. She has worked with the Cape Town Jazzart Dance School in dramatizing and choreographing stories. She has also been directing performances. She cooperated with different organisations on several literacy projects.
Between 1989/90 she organized two national storytelling festivals with the Market Theatre. And in 1992 she founded Zanendaba Organisation in Johannesburg. She held storytelling performances in different parts of the country (South Africa) in raising awareness about endangered animals. In 1995 Gcina Mhlophe hosted weekly storytelling in Ukhozi FM (Radio Zulu) and Umhlobo Wenene (Radio Xhosa). She has been touring the world with her storytelling performances and workshops to countries like France Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, India and Phillipines.
Gcina has also been writing stories and music for musical storytelling shows and animated films. With all her great work she has been receiving awards for preserving the art and heritage of African Storytelling. She started Nozincwadi Literacy Campaign and in 2001 and 2002 she started touring rural areas in South Africa promoting the importance of reading and started school libraries boxes. And since 2008 Nozincwadi have been conducting annual book festivals. In all that she does, Gcina Mhlophe continues to fly the South African flag high.
